When the end is near a lot of people will like to be with their pet. Your pet might also feel more comfortable and less stressed in the loving and familiar surroundings of their home.

Pet euthanasia at home is a choice for many people, so I have gathered some useful information here which I hope will help you in an already difficult time.

If you are considering pet euthanasia at home there are a number of things that you should consider and plan for.

Firstly, you will want to contact a veterinary surgeon who can help you with your wishes. Not all vets will provide a service such as home euthanasia, but as this choice is becoming more favoured by pet owners more and more vets are willing to help you. If your regular vet will not help you they might be in a position to recommend someone who will.
Second, you must decide what you will do with your pet after euthanasia, will you carry out a home burial, or will you take your pet to a pet cemetery or crematorium. Another thing to consider here is transportation and possibly a casket.
Third, you will have to decide weather or not you will have your pet sedated or restrained just prior to the actual euthanasia.
Fourth, you must also be aware that as a pet passes away there will be an emptying of the bladder and the bowel. You should make arrangements for this before hand.

The above points are the realities of pet euthanasia at home. I mention these points so that you can better prepare for them.

You should consult your vet in advance and plan a date, this will give you time to make the necessary preparations not only for the actual euthanasia but also for the after care and your own emotional response.
