But first we would like to offer some simple advice on the wording of a sympathy card to mark the death of a pet.

Here is an example of a sympathy message which could be included in a sympathy ecard.

“Dear Joe and Sue,
Our deepest sympathies during your time of loss.
Please know that we are here for you.
With Love, Bill and Family.”

Another sample sympathy note might go like this.

”Dear Joe and Sue,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
We are sorry for your loss.
Love, Bill and Family”

As a general rule of thumb, keep sympathy and bereavement messages relatively short.

Some commonly used phrases in sympathy messages include:

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with you

  • “Name of deceased” will remain in our hearts forever

  • Our deepest sympathy

  • With deepest sympathy

  • With heartfelt condolences

  • “Name of deceased” will always be in our hearts and memories

  • Please accept my condolences

  • I am sorry for your loss

If you want to write a longer sympathy message, here are some more suggestions and examples of how to express sympathy when a friend or relative suffers a loss:

  • Describe your good memories of the lost pet.

  • If appropriate, include a short personal story or anecdote involving your relationship with the lost pet.

  • Strike a careful balance between the formal tone of a sympathy letter and its deeply personal nature.

  • Remember that a mourner is emotionally drained, so keep your sympathy letter short--under one page in length.

  • If you can do so sincerely, offer to help in some way and include contact information such as your cell phone number and your email address.

  • If you have strong religious convictions, comfort the mourner with your belief that the deceased will find peace and happiness in a better world.

  • Put yourself in the mourner's place and imagine the kind of sympathy letter you would like to receive.

The death of a pet can be a very traumatic time and I am sure that your friend will appreciate your message of sympathy.

I do hope that these suggestions and example of sympathy messages help you to compose a sympathy message for your online memorial or sympathy card.
